King Philip had just recovered a huge amount of gold and silver from the New World (America). He had to promise the bank he would spend the money as soon as it was in his hands. Phillip had received large amounts of money from many different countries in Europe, this gave him the opportunity to pay off all his debts and still have leftover funds. "Do something with the money while it's in your hands, Majesty" Phillip's advisor told him, "Build." So the King called his royal architect, "Let's make a palace as big as mountain." It also makes Madrid the capital of Spain center of government.

La Sagrada Familia (Barcelona) Construction of La Sagrada Familia were begun under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar in 1882 and then continued by Antoni Gaudi, a very influential figure in Spain. Gaudi was not able to live to see the church's completion though. The Spanish Civil War has been the only halt in construction on the church since its start. La Sagrada Familia has an incredible architecture that draws in huge crowds of tourists, even in it's incomplete state. It also holds great symbolism in Spain. Along with seven other of Gaudi's works, La Sagrada Familia is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Since Spain is mostly Roman Catholic, La Sagrada Familia being a large Roman Catholic Church really symbolizes Spain's history and citizens' essence.
